Virtual Analog Synthesizer Plugin
Silk is a virtual analogue synthesizer plugin dedicated to a single waveform:
The sawtooth, which is among the most used and common waveforms to create sounds with subtractive analog and virtual analog synthesis.
Silk has got two sawtooth oscillators which each generate an unison sound of 7 combined voices.
These parts in this "multisaw" can be spead and blended in, leading to a very rich airy and bright sound with lots of interesting harmonics. An additional noise oscillator can add some dirt.
These oscillators build the sonic heart of Silk. This sound is then shaped by the filter. In addition to the classic low, high and bandpass filters often used in subtractive synthesis, Silk has also got a formant filter which produces voice-like sounds.
Combined with a flexible modulation matrix, a creamy chorus, stereo delay and reverb effect, Silk has got sounds that can be used in all types of electronic music.
The 2 multisaw oscillators provide the sonic heart of Silk. They operate in unison mode of 7 detuned voices. These voices can be detuned from the base frequency and the volume of these parts can be adjusted in relation to the base voice using the blend knob. Both oscillators can be detuned and their range can be set which allows together with the noise oscillator for the creation of lush sounds perfect for thick leads, pads, and basses.
Apart from the resonant lowpass, highpass and bandpass filters, Silk has also got a formant filter. By selecting one of the provided vowel settings, the according frequencies are emphasized.
Using this filter you can create choir like sounds. Chaning the cutoff frequency for a formant filter morphs to another vowel.
Altering the resonance value changes the slope of the emphasized frequencies.
The modulation matrix offers extensive control over your sound design, being the key to to create evolving and responsive soundscapes.
The modulation sources including 2 LFOs and 2 dedicated mod envelopes can easily being routed to up to 8 destinations like multisaw and noise oscillator parameters, filter cutoff and resonance, or the pitch.
This feature provides flexible control over your sounds, enabling subtle adjustments or more complex modulations.
This short track is a demo of a few selected presets.
All parts in the demo have been made using only Silk, the sound has been
recorded directly, no additional effects or processing was used.
This video shows some of the basic editing capabilities of Silk.
For illustration purposes the editing has been automated in a DAW. All sounds except the drum loop are recorded directly from Silk, no additional effects or processing was used.
Boing Poum Tchak! has made a demo video playing selected presets.
In order to run Silk on your computer you need to have the following in place. Silk is availble for Windows and Mac.
You can download the demo version for PC or Mac.
The unregistered version of Silk can be used for an unlimited time. However, presets can't be saved and every 60 seconds the audio signal is muted for a short moment.
You will be asked for a serial number each time when you open Silk in a new DAW session.
